International premiere
Chee-Ke
The titular Chee-Ke, whose appearance really reminds us of the German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, is not a regular police officer. With fun green moustache, tinted sunglasses and a colourful do, this man who all felons fear works at the "dance police".
You might be asking: what the actual f---?
Indeed, everything in the psychedelic, cannabis-scented, akin-to-the-queer Yakutian film revolves around pop songs and break dance, because dancing in this cinematic universe is no less than a matter of life and death.
Anatoli Kirillin, the shining star behind the eponymous character, had his first claim to fame as an actor in the music videos of the popular Yakutian singer Uljana Li-Fu. The latter also makes an appearance in the film, directed by her husband Viktor, the producer and cinematographer of several popular films in their home country.
Chee-Ke will have its international premiere at HÕFF and is definitely one of the more outlandish films this festival.
