HÕFF audience will have an early opportunity to see Ari Aster's latest work ‘Beau is Afraid’, starring Joaquin Phoenix.

The long-awaited film is going to run in Estonian cinemas from the 28th of April and appears at HÕFF on the same day.

"With his previous works, Ari Aster has created quite high expectations. According to trailer, ‘Beau is Afraid’ is going to be different - something surprising in any case," says Helmut Jänes, the head of the festival.

Indeed, quite a few publications consider ‘Beau is Afraid’ Aster's most eccentric work so far. Since neither festival organisers nor film journalists have not yet seen the film, HÕFF team waits restlessly for the world premiere.

The surreal horror comedy is a story about Beau, a man afraid of everything outside his house. One day, he has to face the outer world and his fears. A bizarre series of events begins, and Beau has to realise what is real and what exists only in his fears. Beau is portrayed by an Academy Award winner, Joaquin Phoenix.

Besides ‘Beau is Afraid’, Aster's debut feature, ‘Hereditary’, appears at HÕFF.

"For horror fans, including myself, Aster's film debut was like a rush of fresh air for the genre that started to seem outdated," comments Jänes. "That outlines pretty well Aster's creation language for those who haven't seen it yet."

So far, all Ari Aster films have appeared at HÕFF. In 2020, ‘Midsommar’ director's cut was screened with a virtual QA.

‘Beau is Afraid’ is distributed by Adastra Cinema.

Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival dates are 28.–30. April 2023.

The entire program will be released on the 13th of April.
